Absinthe; Gin; Vodka and internationally recognised whisky in Wellington. Grappa and Moonshine in Klapmuts
We depart from your chosen accommodation en-route to the outskirts of Wellington, a 45 minute drive from Cape Town's city centre. Wellington, a quaint, historical town is found at the foot of the Groenberg and Hawekwa mountain ranges where the scenic Bains Kloof mountain pass beckons. This is the location of our first visit.
Jorgensen's Distillery is the first privately own distillery in South Africa and was established in 1994 by craft spirit pioneer, Roger Jorgensen. Located in a largely unchanged Cape Dutch traditional homestead dating back to 1812 is where the signature range of Gins, Primitiv Vodkas and Absynthe are produced. A 200 litre copper pot-still nicknamed "Ugly Betty" dating back to the 1860's was adopted and is where masterful recipes and indigenous botanical flavours are harnessed.
You will be invited to tour the facility as well as sample their range. Are you brave enough to try the Chilli Vodka? You are also able to purchase your favourite tipple.
Our next tour starts at 10h00 and lasts approximately 2 hours.
The international award winning James Sedgwick Whisky Distillery. Purchased in 1886 by J Sedgewick & Co, this particular distillery is probably one of the most beautiful grain whisky distilleries in the world and is overseen by Master Distiller, Andy Watts. This exceptional amber liquid is double matured in first-fill bourbon casks giving it its distinctive award winning smooth flavour. The bespoke distillery tour provides one with a first-hand experience on how the whisky is crafted and is complemented by a unique food pairing menu. This tour is a real sensory treat for anyone with an interest in this world renowned tipple.
Lunch! at the fabulous Dunstone Estate's Stone Kitchen is a must and is included in this tour. Tasty, homemade fayre awaits with beautiful vistas of the surrounding mountains. Enjoy either their renowned Lamb burger; Chicken pie; wraps, soups or even curry of the day! Cappuccino's, tea or soft drinks are also included.
14h00. Wellington Boutique Brandy Distillery at the foot of the famous Bainskloof beckons. It's time to sample craft-made 5 year old pot-still brandy and a tour with Dr Rolf Schumacher. No relation to the Formula 1 driver although just as passionate about providing a top quality product to the market he will get your taste buds red-lining.
View the pot-still in the restaurant that specialises in German cuisine and consider a unique purchase of this sought after spirit.
If time permits and the appetite for more tastings is strong, we will pop in to the very popular Wilderers Distillery in Klapmuts on the way home.
Here you will find a collection of award winning Gins; Grappa and Moonshine. Apple pie flavoured Grappa anyone?
Tastings are charged at R15.00 per tasting and as this is not a specified tour stop, purchases and tastings will be for your own account.
16h00 ish is time to hit the road and I will be driving you back to your accommodation without a worry in the world about drinking and driving!
This is a very memorable and popular tour. Ideal for the Cape winter months.
Get your mates together and have a fantastic experience!
